Priscilla Fikes, President General
National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865
Thank you so much for visiting our NSDU website. I hope that our website might answer your questions as to who and what the National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865 is all about.
Let me introduce myself, my name is Priscilla Fikes, I am the newly elected President General of NSDU and my term of office is 2008-2011. I, like so many ladies, thought I would never be able to belong to such a society as ours. You see, my Dad's side of the family is from South Carolina and my mother's side is Canadian. Luckily, my maternal grandmother, at the time I started my genealogical journey, was still living and well into her 90's. So, I started to ask her about her parents and grandparents and was delighted to discover she and granddad were both born in the United States, she in Michigan and he in Minnesota. And from there, my research lead me to my Union Soldier Ancestors. So, you never know until you start asking questions and researching your family ancestry that you too may be a Union Daughter.
I am very fortunate to have joined a chapter in which three other women have also served in this esteemed office and who are all a great inspiration to me and the National Society. Since our beginning in 1912, all of our chapters, across the north and south, east and west, have members with similar and inspirational stories of their families and ancestors. Not only do we as members share a common thread of ancestors who fought to preserve the Union, we share a bond of continued patriotic service to our country by providing comfort items to our veterans and to our sons and daughters currently serving in our military, preserving history through our research and documentation, and supporting education through scholarships.
Please, take your time, visit all the sections within our website, and email us if you would like to join us in honoring all of our Union patriot and soldier ancestors by becoming a member of the National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865.
And through the words of our motto, "Let Us Have Peace",
Priscilla M. Fikes, President General
